Valentine’s Day date ideas in Sunset Park

The first days of February are a reminder that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Whether Feb. 14 means something to you or not, it’s hard to escape the flood of red hearts, flowers, chocolates, and restaurant plans where people spend on someone special.
In 2025, Valentine’s Day spending reached $27.5 billion in the U.S., with 35% of consumers planning an “evening out,” according to the National Retail Federation, a retail trade association based in Washington, D.C. Valentine’s Day ranks among the biggest consumer-spending holidays, behind Mother’s Day.
It started 600 years ago
History writers often trace the holiday’s romantic association back to a 14th-century poem by English poet Geoffrey Chaucer titled The Parlement of Foules. A line about birds choosing their mates on St. Valentine’s Day is widely cited as an early link between the date and romantic love.
A century later, European nobles began writing poems known as “valentines” to love interests, helping build the tradition that tied romance to Feb. 14. Six centuries after that, Valentine’s Day became a time to splurge on someone special. As the saying goes, “a full belly, a happy heart.”
Plenty of options in Sunset Park
Whether you want something informal, casual, or more of a dressed-up night out, Sunset Park has a spot for every kind of Valentine’s Day. A walk down Fifth Avenue or Eighth Avenue makes the neighborhood’s variety obvious, with options for nearly any kind of date.
According to a Commercial District Needs Assessment produced through NYC Small Business Services, Sunset Park has 125 restaurants, plus 21 bars, clubs, and liquor stores, and 78 coffee shops and limited-service restaurants.
David Estrada, executive director of the Sunset Park Business Improvement District on Fifth Avenue, highlighted the neighborhood’s range of food and entertainment options.
“Walking through Sunset Park in spring, in February, or in March is beautiful,” he said. “You can stop at a coffee shop. You can have a cocktail, if you feel like a cocktail. Maybe you both like biking. There are eight to 10 bike shops.”
Not in the mood for a cocktail, but craving a Guinness instead? John Heagle, a Sunset Park resident since 2012, recommends Irish Haven on Fourth Avenue for its friendly bartenders.
“I love a good dive bar,” he added.
Irish Haven has also been used as a filming location, including for scenes in the 2006 Oscar-winning film The Departed.
Others mentioned Industry City as a favorite date destination, with plenty of shops to browse and easy access to other parts of the neighborhood.
Judy’s and Tacos El Bronco, both on Fifth Avenue, are also frequent favorites, often paired with a walk through a green space. A stroll through Green-Wood Cemetery, or a visit to Sunset Park itself, can be part of a good date.
“I’d love to walk through the whole park while we drink coffee. If we’re brave enough, we’d join the aunties who line-dance,” said Sandra Córdoba, 36, referring to the Asian line-dancing groups that show up in summer. “In the end we’d sit on a bench, chatting nonstop, watching the sunset over our beautiful city,” followed by food at La Cabaña and music at Sunset Stoop, added the immigration attorney, who lives in Sunset Park.
You might not see dance groups during a cold Valentine’s Day in February, but a sunny-day visit is still rewarded with standout views of the Lower Manhattan skyline.
On Reddit, some users shared favorite Asian food spots in Sunset Park. Ba Xuyên on Eighth Avenue for bánh mì, a traditional Vietnamese sandwich, was one of them. Others recommended hotpot, a Chinese-style meal centered on a simmering pot of broth.
“Hotpot is one of our favorite places for a romantic dinner,” wrote Reddit user Skylord\ah, describing favorite restaurants for him and his girlfriend. “So far Laojie has been one of my favorites. However, Xiang Hotpot on Fort Hamilton Parkway and 59th Street has been great the times I’ve visited, even though it’s a bit far for me,” the user added.
This Valentine’s Day, Sunset Park has what you need for someone special, because for many people, love starts with the stomach.
