Sunset Park poultry workers awarded $33,000 in restitution after city settlement
NYC says workers at Kam Fung Wong Poultry on Third Avenue were denied wages and can claim restitution.

The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) has reached a settlement with Kam Fung Wong Poultry, located at 4008 3rd Avenue in Sunset Park, over violations of the city’s Earned Safe and Sick Leave Law.

The settlement found that the poultry business failed to provide legally required sick leave and retaliated against employees who took time off to care for themselves or loved ones, according to the city. The agreement secures $33,000 in restitution for 26 current and former workers, many of whom speak Spanish and Mandarin.

DCWP staff joined Council Member Alexa Avilés’s office to conduct outreach in Sunset Park, informing affected workers about how to file claims and receive compensation.

“New Yorkers should never be punished for taking the time they are entitled to when they or their loved ones are sick or unsafe,” said DCWP Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga. “This settlement not only delivers relief to affected workers but also ensures that the business will comply with the law going forward.”

Avilés, who represents Sunset Park, emphasized the importance of spreading information about workers’ rights. “It is crucial that people are equipped with the knowledge to fight exploitation, and I hope this serves as a reminder to businesses that they must follow the law or they will be held accountable,” she said.

Workers employed at Kam Fung Wong Poultry between March 7, 2019 and March 7, 2022 may be eligible for compensation. Claims can be filed at nyc.gov/workers, where information is available in multiple languages.

The case is part of broader enforcement efforts: in recent years, DCWP has secured millions in restitution citywide for violations of paid safe and sick leave and other workplace protections.
